Mithun Chakraborty comes to the movies without any of the roots of Bollywood’s star families. Mrigaya was Mithun Chakraborty’s first film. Mithun won the National Award for his performance in that film. Before reaching mainstream Bollywood, Mithun had carved a niche for himself in the world of parallel cinema.
At the same time, Mithun Chakraborty has openly said that he had to face a lot of discrimination due to his origin and colour. Mithun Chakraborty said that when he started making movies in Bollywood, he used to get rejected because of his color. The actor also reveals that the actresses were not ready to act with him.
Mithun Chakraborty begins to focus on dance to overcome the stigma attached to her color. Mithun Chakraborty found a way to overcome discrimination by diverting the attention of people of his color to his footsteps. At the same time, Mithun also said in an interview to Radio Nasha that it was the heroine Seenath Aman who said that she was beautiful to look at.
“People’s expectations rose when they saw me. She believed that her son could become an actor too. They realized that living in a village shack was not an obstacle. I became the hero of the common man. It was a very important for me to be a hero of the common people”, says Mithun Chakraborty.
“I thought if I danced with my feet, no one would see my color.” That’s exactly what happened. People forgot my color because of my dancing. No one expected someone my color to be the hero. I feel very sad. I have cried a lot,” he says. He also remembers that Zeenat Aman was the first veteran actor who was ready to act with him.
“No one was willing to act with me. I couldn’t be seen as a hero. A lot of people didn’t want to act with me because they thought they wouldn’t get fame if they acted with me. That’s when Seenath Aman comes in. He said I was good, good looking, very handsome. After that, there was no going back,” recalls Mithun Chakraborty.
Mithun Chakraborty soon became a Bollywood superstar. She has acted in movies like Disco Dancer, Dance Dance, Prem Pratighya and Agneepath. Mithun’s children also dabbled in film but were unable to replicate her success.
